It was desperate times that the worship service could be the last service here in unfamiliar Toronto and 100 letters have been sent out to nearby churches. As the last minutes approached and we became more afraid of not knowing what to do and we were willing to continue our services by renting church spaces, here or there. We were desperate but sincere, more so than any other times. But as always, God filled our needs with better things than we ever expected or imagined and turned the difficulty into a brand new beginning.
Vietnamese church started making abundant new stories since meeting Youngnak Church in 2006. It wasn’t just being allowed to use church space for service at no cost. They became brother churches and collaborator churches that share dreams and visions.
They showed us love by praying for us, talking to us, through fellowship, sharing food, and participating in worship services in a language they didn’t understand and our hearts were opened.
Also, we were surprised by their passion toward the Kingdom of God and their love toward other people and nations. Through their testimonies and work that God allowed through them, we wanted to learn the energy and strength of the Korean churches.
This has become a foundation for a bigger picture in our ministry direction and substance.
We started as a church with 35 people in Scarborough just to continue worship. But now we hope to become a church that will awaken all Vietnamese people in and around the GTA and become a church that can positively influence all Canada and our mother country Vietnam.
We’ve learned why we need to look closely on children’s education and set up Youth and English Ministries. We’ve considered and consulted on how to plant the gospel into our children and bring them up to continue our bi-cultural heritage. We’ve also watched the prayer movements of the Korean church and started our own prayer meeting on Saturdays, conducted Discipleship Training and sent out mission teams. This is how we started the Vietnamese church and we did not stop at just setting up the in-church system and programs for the next generation. We began sharing the vision and challenge with other Vietnamese churches to not stay within our own group but reach out to other ethnic groups and stand in solidarity to establish a more plentiful Kingdom of God.
The Vietnamese church that struggled and needed a place just to survive have become different with love of our members and the help of other churches that considered us brothers, friends and families. We have become a healthy church with 120 members and have grown to a church with a vision of serving the people in Toronto, praying for mother country and serving this country with other ethnic groups.
